Patient Escort Volunteers Needed

By Karol Pokley, Director, Volunteer Services

The MGH Volunteers are taking customer service to the next level and setting a great example. A new initiative is underway to take each and every individual that enters our facility to their hospital destination. Information Desk volunteers are being paired up in an effort to carry out this plan. This plan is the first step in an overall concierge service being implemented. Why are we going out of our way to provide this service? Because it is all about the patient, how we can lessen their stress and fear and give them the best hospital experience possible. If this can be accomplished, it is our hope that patients will continue to allow MGH to provide their healthcare.

Here is how you can do your part in this exciting new initiative. I am in need of at least 12 volunteers at our East and Skywalk information desks. I have a variety of weekdays and times available between 8 am and 4 pm. Also, let me know if you are interested in helping out prior to 8 am or after 4 pm. The next step is to expand the hours in the early morning and evening.

Patient escorting is a great way to learn the hospital and keep active. You will have an opportunity to do a lot of walking. Training will be provided. You will soon be an expert at knowing what is where in our hospital maze. You will need to be able to push a wheelchair.  But we would not, however expect you to push someone that is beyond your ability.

Please call the Volunteer Office at 225-3280 or email me at karol.pokley@mghs.org if you are interested in coming ‘on board’ in this new customer service initiative. What a great way to give back to your community, one patient at a time!
